The Magisterial Short Statement on BDS

I cannot imagine a better, succinct, even-keeled examination of global BDS than this. Not surprisingly, it was penned by a commentator without peer – Yossi Klein Halevi.

I don’t like it. Half of his argument against BDS is that all it does is strengthen “far right politicians” [i.e., the kind of politicians many religious Jews vote for] who believe any hatred of Israel is based on what Israel is and not what it does [i.e., the same opinion many of the above-referenced Jews hold.] He also refers to the Israeli “occupation” of Palestinians, a loaded term used by the far left that should simply be rejected out of hand.

Frankly, there’s a good argument that the best way to defeat BDS is to let it die of neglect. Many believe that the huge amount of attention paid by Jewish groups to BDS proponents does nothing more than encourage them. [The mirror-image of Klein’s  argument above, I suppose.] Its true that some of the larger proponents, like the Presbyterians, might press forward without opposition, but they are pressing forward even with the opposition, and anyway they have plenty of their own problems to deal with. So perhaps some measure of organized opposition is called for, but not the constant and loud public hand-wringing we currently see. In any event, Klein goes too far in his op-ed.
