Rabbi Avi Shafran: I hesitated to write up my remarks for publication since I felt that they were the sort of things all Jews who have benefited from Jewish educations well know already.

Ori: In other words, these are things known to a minority of US Jews. If I understand correctly, you send these articles to a number of newspapers in addition to posting them on Cross Currents.

I don't know how many readers of Cross Currents haven't had this kind of education (I can point to one, a frequent poster called Ori). But if you add those up with the readers of the newspapers who receive your articles, I expect you'll get a sizable number.

Dear All,

Thank you for your kind comments and the chizuk they afford me. I hesitated to write up my remarks for publication since I felt that they were the sort of things all Jews who have benefited from Jewish educations well know already. But your reaction makes me realize that my decision was right, that heartfelt Jews always appreciate even a "review" of the obvious. As the Mesilas Yesharim teaches, sometimes the most simple truths can fade from our consciousnesses and benefit from being pondered anew.

Rabbi Shafran-

Yasher Koach. Finally, a Bais Yaakov commencement address without the obligatory references to Tzniyus and that all of the graduates should be zocheh to marry full-time, term-unlimited Kollel. How refreshing! (I hope you didn't take any flak for those glaring omissions.)

Wow. I wish my high school, college or law school commencement addresses were half as meaningful as what you've written here. Thanks for sharing it, I feel like reading your speech here makes up for the trite nonsense put forth at my various graduations.

Reb Avi,
Everything that you write is a gem. I hope we get to meet sometime. My wife and I read your book "Migrant Soul" some number of years ago and lent it out until finally it was never returned. I hope the person who forgot to return it is doing likewise. May Hashem bless you and may you merit seeing that fourth "R".
