Perhaps people should have consulted Daas Torah in the following situations:
1) Zionism
2) Whether to Europe before the Holocaust
3) The Soviet Jewry Movement
(I could go on, but do not have the time.)

Daas Torah should always be consulted by Israeli Leaders. Hashem is the only power in the world, so only by following daas Torah can this situation really be resolved.

PM Olmert's recent speech to the Knesset on the current war contained much more religious content than I would have expected. This fact raised these possibilities:

1. The PM believes that the Israeli public will respond to a religious appeal.

2. The PM believes that elements in the US government or populace will be more sympathetic to an Israel because of his religious imagery.

3. The PM has had some stirrings toward teshuvah.

Possibility #1 would be encouraging for what it would say about the Israeli public.

Possibility #2 would really be in the category of PR spin, so I hope it's not that.

Possibility #3 would be a long shot but is intriguing. Some meaningful conversation between PM Olmert and the Gedolim would help him and Israel in many ways, not only as regards the war.

"You honestly think that the Prime Minister of Israel should call up Rabbi Shteinman about how to deal with Lebanon and Gaza?"

I do.

Do you honestly think that Mr Olmert, with all of his good intentions (and may G-d bless him with the wisdom to lead us on a path to end the murder of our people and to everlasting peace) knows how to deal with Lebanon and Gaza?

"I think it could be said, on the other hand, that our forefather Yaakov allowed Esav (the neighborhood bully of the time) to save face, even when Esav approached him to wage war."

"When Esav approached him to wage war": He had not ALREADY waged war (unlike the arabs that have waged war on us for many years now)
