The Daf Yomi of Sunday, July 16, Yoma 39, cites the following verse (Zechariah 11:1):

פתח לבנון דלתיך ותאכל אש בארזיך
Open, Lebanon, your doors, and let fire consume your cedars.

    I find it very interesting to contrast the comment of Shmuel and the comment of Tzvi above, even though they said basically the same thing…

    You interpreted it for good, unlike the Gemara which had a different understanding of ‘Lebanon’. Amen, ken yehi ratzon.

    What is your point? This gemmara and pasuk are referring to the destruction of the bais hamikdash

    The passuk is explained both as referring to Lebanon, and to the Beis Hamikdash/Eretz Yisrael. Both explanations are true now.

    מצפון תפתח הרעה על כל יושבי הארץ…
    ונלחמו אליך ולא יוכלו לך, כי איתך אני נאום ה’ להצילך.
    [Yirmiyahu, 1:14,19]
    “from the North will the evil open up, upon all the inhabitants of the Land…And they will wage war upon you, but not overcome you, for I am with you, says Hashem, to save you.”
