I had a hard disk crash 2 years ago and sent my hard drive to the folks who restored the Challenger's hard drive. Mine, they said, was unrecoverable. It would have been like "taking a chainsaw to the surface of a vinyl LP and trying to retrieve any of the music". Get yourself a DVD writer and back up as often as it would pain you to lose data.
