Bob,

I read the article, and don't think you should hold your breath. Why someone should ask for an apology for justified criticism is beyond me -- but in any case, Yoffie was being more than a tad hypocritical.

Rabbi Shafran himself contacted a high school student who wrote in Reform Judaism magazine that she had learned all the Orthodox hate her. He not only contradicted that, but offered to come visit her Hebrew school to have a dialogue with all her classmates. Her teacher refused.

Last year on this blog, another writer found a NFTY activity which included a discussion of why the Orthodox think Reform Jews are "Not real Jews because we don’t observe properly."

Perhaps Yoffie should clean house before asking for an apology from Rabbi Shafran!

Perhaps there will be an exchange of apologies, as Rabbi Yoffie publically asked Rabbi Shafran for an apology in the pages of the Jerusalem Post.

From all accounts I've read, Rabbi Gilman's statement was very controversial.
Many people spoke up against it. Furthermore, the more I read about the talk
the less clear it becomes exactly what he said. I've been unable to find a transcript
of the talk. I assume Mr. Rosenblum wasn't there - has he read the talk, heard from people
who were present at the talk, or just read popular accounts of the talk?

Gilman may not be a "fringe" figure within the Conservative movement, but he sits on the far left of the movement's ideology and will gladly say so to anyone who asks. To accept his opinion as an accurate description of the Conservative agenda is logically akin to defining America's national zeitgeist based on a single speech by Howard Dean.

"Gilman is no fringe figure within Conservative Judaism but one of its leading lights,"

That won't stop C rabbis from continuing to claim that the C movement IS halachic. They don't have any such concept as a "godol" or "da'as Torah" in the C movement. What do they care if Gilman said it's not a halachic movement?
