“He told her that no one from the press or Machon Hoda�a had ever contacted him, and that he was very disturbed about the way his words were being distorted and misquoted.” Sounds like the way that the Gedolim treated Rabbi Slifkin. Is Yated going to give Rabbi Slifkin the right to print a response, like the Jerusalem Post offered Mrs. Schmidt? Are you going to allow this post to appear on Cross-Currents?

Re: Retractions.

I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said. But issuing a retraction does make people wary of the next thing they read. The New York Times took a black eye from the whole Jayson Blair affair, and alot of people now read it more skeptically. If Ma’ariv’s readership read, say, ten retractions relating to reporting of Chareidi or Orthodox issues, they might become more skeptical.

Retractions? First of all, did Maariv ever retract anything derogatory to Chareidim? Second, I saw a reference in the Wall Street Journal of February 4 2005, in a column by Sharon Begley, to a paper to be published by a man named Lewandowsky in Psychological Science. He says that �People build mental models. By the time they receive a retraction, the original misinformation has already become an integral part of that mental model, or world view, and disregarding it would leave the world view a shambles. People continue to rely on misinformation even if they demonstrably remember and understand subsequent retraction.� This, of course, is a restatement of what Chazal say about “lo siso sheima shov.” The people who believed the first article will not even see, to say nothing of believing, any retraction.
