Leapa's comment dampened a little the optimism I felt after reading Pipes' article. However, I still find Rabbi Shmuel Bloom's speech very exciting. Could it herald change in the Orthodox world? After all, how can Torah observant communities act on Rabbi Bloom’s words if the next generation isn’t properly educated in geography, history and other secular subjects? Could the fading away of non-Orthodox communities result in those of us who are left striving more towards a Golden Mean? Or does that smack too much of ‘evolution’?

And what about the increase in Orthodox in Israel? Any broader duties there as a result of being a bigger percentage of the Jewish population?
